What Is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the lungs and airways that causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing.

Asthma affects all race, sex and ages.

Although Asthma cannot be cured, it can be controlled by working closely with a physician, learn what causes your asthma symptoms, and how to avoid them.

Causes/Risk Factors

The causes or cause of Asthma are not well understood and likely differ among individuals. Some causes include:

  • Heredity
  • Behaviors such as smoking
  • Environmental exposures to viral infections
  • Respiratory infections
  • Exposure to tobacco smoke (both from secondhand smoke and smoking)
  • Pollen
  • Molds
  • Certain Foods
